(And Why You’ll Be So Glad You Booked Both)
If there’s one thing I wish I could go back and change about my own birth experiences, it’s this: I wish I had birth photography for my first two babies, and a doula for any of them. Seriously, I think about it all the time. Back then, I kept telling myself it was too expensive. I took the hospital birth class, had my cell phone, even brought my own camera to my first birth. Spoiler: it’s not the same. It just isn’t.
With my last baby, I finally had photos taken, and they mean everything to me. I probably should have had a doula too, but honestly, that experience is what inspired me to become one.
I still remember the look on my mom’s face while I was waiting to push. She was in pure disbelief, and not even a little bit happy, that the doctor was making me wait. The room was buzzing, nurses moving fast, and I was sitting there breathing like Darth Vader with an oxygen mask while Star Wars played in the background because of course my May the 4th baby had perfect timing. Then one push later, my second VBAC was here.
Every time I see those photos, I’m right back in that moment. Not just remembering what happened, but feeling it all over again.
That’s the thing about birth photography. It isn’t about what it looks like. It’s about what it feels like.
And when you pair that with doula support? Magic.
The Doula Side: Presence, Support, Calm
As a doula, my job is to hold space for you. To help you feel grounded, informed, and safe. I’m there for the contractions, the questions, the “I can’t do this” moments, and the deep breaths that follow when you realize you absolutely can.
But I’ll be honest, I can’t turn my photographer brain off. Ever. And honestly, that’s a good thing.
Because while I’m helping you navigate your birth, I’m also quietly noticing the little details that will tell your story later. The light through the window, your partner’s hand on your back, the way your whole body softens when you finally hear that first cry.
Birth is raw, powerful, and deeply human. It’s not about perfect poses or bright lights. It’s about connection.

The Photographer Side: Storytelling Without Distraction
When people hear “birth photography,” they sometimes imagine big cameras and flashbulbs, but that’s not what I do. My style is gentle, storytelling, and never graphic unless you specifically want that. Most of the time, my clients’ galleries are waist-up shots or creative angles that honor your privacy.
You’ll barely notice I’m taking photos. There’s already so much going on in a birth room (nurses, partners, midwives, maybe a parent or two) that I blend right in. And after baby arrives, my focus shifts completely to you: your first moments together, the awe, the tears, the joy.
Because that’s where the real story lives.
Why Both Together Just Makes Sense
A doula supports your experience.
A photographer preserves your memories.
When you have both in one person, you get the best of both worlds.
As your doula, I know when to step in and when to quietly hold space. As your photographer, I know how to document those moments in a way that feels true to your story. There might be a little give and take (because if I’m squeezing hips, I’m not holding the camera), but the flow between the two roles is natural.
You won’t have to worry about coordinating two people or explaining your birth preferences twice. You’ll already have someone you trust, someone who knows your birth plan, your comfort level, and your heart.
And when it’s all over, you’ll have a gallery that helps you process and reflect.
Because birth isn’t just something you get through. It’s something you experience. Photography helps you see the strength, the love, and the transformation that’s hard to see when you’re in it. Looking back on those moments helps you heal, process, and celebrate everything your body just accomplished.

A Final Thought
If you’ve ever looked at birth photos and thought, “I wish I had that,” let this be your sign. You deserve to remember your story, not just in fragments or fuzzy memories, but in the real, powerful, emotional truth of it.
